![]() ![]() "A man had a brand new video game in his hands, still shrink-wrapped and in a double-taped plastic bag, and he already didn't care about it anymore." He shook hands with Wada, had his picture taken, listened to Wada's perfunctory thanks for his years of customer loyalty and fan servitude, and then, when offered a chance to weep in thanks, accepted the microphone and spoke in a quick super-whisper: 'Please remake Final Fantasy 7 for the PlayStation 3 thank you goodbye.' He gave the microphone back and walked off. "One dandruffy young man took that challenge, waiting all night in the pleasant weather. During a launch event for Final Fantasy 12 in Shibuya, Tokyo, the first fan in line was set to be awarded with the opportunity to shake hands and greet none other than Yoichi Wada, the now-former president of Square Enix. In 2006, video game developer and current video editor for Kotaku Tim Rogers, witnessed this fervent thirst in person. When we thought there was no way graphics could get better. Meanwhile, all fans could think about was a Final Fantasy 7 remake. Releases slowed as Japanese developers grappled with the realities of modern engines like Unreal Engine and the finicky PlayStation 3 hardware. This was around the time that Square Enix entered a bit of a slump. Quantic Dream's "Kara" tech demo from 2012 birthed the idea for Detroit: Become Human, for instance. Sometimes the industry's seen tech demos eventually evolve into something greater. But none generated as much buzz as Final Fantasy 7's glossy intro. For the PlayStation 2, a Final Fantasy 8 one. There was the Final Fantasy 6 SGI tech demo. ![]() Tech demos based on previous games weren't even a new endeavor for Square Enix. The intro to Final Fantasy 7 is instantly memorable, so it's understandable why it got the tech demo treatment. Nostalgia that hadn't even congealed to its full potential yet, honestly. In 2005, Square just had a Final Fantasy 7 tech demo that tickled everyone's nostalgia. ![]() We hadn't even heard Square's ambitious Fabula Nova Crystallis pitch for the Final Fantasy 13 saga yet we hadn't gotten our first glimpse at the spinoff that would eventually borne Final Fantasy 15 either. It was Square Enix's loud signal that yes, there would be Final Fantasy games on PlayStation 3. In 2005 though, all we had was a tech demo to go by.Īt the time, it was impressive. Final Fantasy 7 is being remade on new terms, and after suffering a slight recent delay, it will be out on April 10, 2020. Soon, we will see what Midgar and the rest of the opening crew look like in action. It's the sort of game that you play and wonder how it would look with modern technology. The way it frames its firmly angled scenes remains visually pleasing today, even if it's hard to deduce where you can actually walk in the geometry sometimes. Its twists and turns break your heart and delight, all within itty bitty blue text frames. Your ragtag initial party-an ex-military man with some serious baggage, a flower seller with a mysterious heritage, the girl-next-door-who-took-up-boxing, an ecoterrorist with a heart of gold, and a lion that can talk-only gets more rambunctious from Midgar onward. From the moment Cloud leaps off that train with style and the legendary Nobuo Uematsu score kicks in, Final Fantasy 7 feels like an adventure. Still, it's the most beloved Final Fantasy in existence for good reason. Final Fantasy 9, released the year after that, returned to the Final Fantasy 7-ish style, only its stars were a lot more clearly defined the backgrounds more intricate and beautiful than what was possible before.įor all that Final Fantasy 7 impressed with, it was just as swiftly outshone by its own developer, not to mention the rest of the games industry. Cutscenes transitioned immediately into gameplay. Two measly years later, Square Enix released Final Fantasy 8, a game that matured the chibi polygons to actual human-shaped figures. But it quickly became the victim of the worst fate that can befall awe-inspiring tech: it aged. (It made a star out of Midgar, after all.) In 2005, Final Fantasy 7 itself was still young, not even 10 years old. Before the tech demo, we only really knew Final Fantasy 7's real potential in dreams: The game itself contained just blocky polygons with crude cartoonish faces while its background art became the true star. Yet no matter how large the font that read "technical demo" could be, Square Enix recreating the opening of Final Fantasy 7 for a PS3 engine tech demo was a cruel experiment. ![]() ![]() ![]() It was released on October 7th, 2014, and is available on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 for $59.99. NBA 2K15 was developed and published by 2K Games. But for those who only pick up the new edition of a sports franchise every few years when there’s some notable and positive changes, I feel confident that 2K15 is one that fits that bill, hinkiness and all. Sure, there’s still the microtransaction creep of Virtual Currency, and that’s still annoying. Because that’s the point: you can make this go how you want it to.īetween MyLeague, MyGM, M圜areer and multiplayer modes like MyPark and the more tradition types - all of which have functioned admirably online, I should note, though MyPark has been less busy than I would prefer, in my experience - NBA 2K15 is as fleshed out as a sports game gets these days. It’s more or less a sandbox that provides a whole lot of freedom even while CPU teams offer you one totally unfair trade after another - but thankfully there’s actually a slider that will dictate how difficult it is to negotiate a decent trade. That’s not to say you can’t play god, of course, because that is the point of this mode. Though some fundamentals like the salary cap can’t be turned off or on after you’ve begun your 80-year journey. And it’s ridiculously customizable as well, even after you’ve started it up. This is a more straight-up franchise mode, without the fear of being fired. It didn’t need a revamp, and it didn’t get one.īut there is a new mode, MyLeague, that fills in the gaps left by the more hardcore sim of MyGM and the RPG of M圜areer. ![]() That is a particularly weird rub.Īside from M圜areer, MyGM mode returns and a more familiar fashion, but for good reason: it’s a very neat spin on the franchise mode that has been a staple of American sports games for a long time, with its Football Manager-type mechanics. And for some reason when the playoffs roll around you can’t look at the full bracket, instead having to keep track of other teams through social media. I’ve lost count of how many times Paul Millsap has been traded to the Hawks. M圜areer also fields its fair share of the game’s hiccups, with cutscenes triggered by a teammate being traded featuring players who were already on your team as new teammates. Of course we also have plenty of actual NBA personalities delivering lines like they’re just now learning to speak, but what can you do? This year they have the presentation to match their ambitions, with actual actors taking part. Last year saw a revamp of this mode in the new-gen SKUs, with a more story-heavy approach to handling the career of a single player. We’ve learned to live with that stuff, and so when the box score starts giving you +/- ratings in the hundreds I just have to laugh.Īnd it’s difficult to begrudge 2K some weak spots when they’re clearly putting plenty of effort into the experience. We’ve been playing sports games for a lot of years, and so things like that honestly aren’t incredibly aggravating, but they do remind us that on a yearly cycle it’s an evolution - and significant changes to the core gameplay from one title to the next always bring with them some unintentional awkwardness as well. Ballhandling is more responsive and simpler, but those same refs rarely seem to call shooting fouls. The screen mechanic is much more responsive, yes, but the refs call moving screen fouls all the time now. But that’s not the whole story playing defense is just clunky, the controls feeling unresponsive.įor every improvement there’s a corresponding hiccup. Because I always start out in NBA 2K by playing M圜areer with a created player, I assumed initially that the players I guarded were able to whoosh by me for dunks at wile because my guy was bad at defense according to the math of the game. But the main thing is that simply moving around the court feels significantly more pleasant now. And setting screens feels nice, even though it seems you’ll miss on them most of the time. You’re far less likely these days to dribble out of bounds on accident, certainly, and shooting is made easier with a new shot meter - previously, drastically different shot animations for different players made it a challenge to time shots well. When the ball is in your hands, NBA 2K15 feels great. Though it’s still not without notable flaws. But NBA 2K15, far more than last year’s new-generation debut for the series, has reinvigorated the 2K RPGisms into a far smoother, not-at-all-janky experience. But as the last generation went on, those systems didn’t age well, and what had been novel started to feel janky. NBA 2K has long been a series with RPG qualities, and for a long time its systems of percentages and dice rolls of a sort were novel and cool. ![]() ![]() The video received two nominations at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards: Best Female Video and Best Dance Video. Okay, so it doesn't give too much away about possible future storylines. 2 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album for the Marvel Studios film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. Judging by these words, and that post credits sequence, Adam's appearance in Guardians 3 now is now all but guaranteed. But it was one character too many and I didn’t want to lose Mantis and Mantis was more organically part of the movie anyway. I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock. He was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many. 2’s five post-credits scenes will be discussed here. Many of the scenes directly refer to major plot points in the movie. In all truth, I wrote an early treatment where I had Adam Warlock as a part. Spoiler alert: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. “I love Adam Warlock," Gunn said earlier this month. "He’s one of my favorite characters. So we can expect Groot to be at least this size in Infinity War, or, more likely, having continued to grow back into his full, original size.More recently, however, he revealed that he had originally been planning to include Adam more extensively in Guardians Vol 2. In this tag scene, however, we see that more time has passed and Groot is now an annoying teenager, with Star-Lord almost acting as his father. 2 takes place only a few months after part one, so Groot is still very small. But it became more for him to sort of ring that bell so that we can play with it at some point in the future.” 4) Teen Groot Which were great, but the way the story was coming together, there just wasn’t time for that. Written by Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart, and Wes Farrell. by arrangement with Warner Music Group Film & TV Licensing. James had ideas to introduce Adam certainly in volume two, maybe even in part one. Our version of Infinity War is the culmination of all the stories we’ve told up to this point. ![]() “Adam’s not a part of Infinity War, which, of course, he is in the comics, but he’s not in. “The first potential to feel those repercussions will not be until Vol. And, in what feels like some kind of wild dare, Gunn’s film ends with a whole series of credits-adjacent stingers, all of them potential guideposts for the future of the Guardians series and the. Which, again, just gives James another set of tools to play with as he’s piecing together future stories.” ![]() “One of James’ ideas was fleshing out the character of Yondu… and having the fun of tipping our hat to the original Guardians team from the comics. “You will not see them again until Guardians 3 at the earliest,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told io9. Yes, this is basically a reunion of Marvel’s original Guardians of the Galaxy team, from the late ’60s/early ’70s, and odds are they are going to play a part in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. ![]() Starhawk in the comics - played by Sylvester Stallone, Ving Rhames as Charlie-27, Michelle Yeoh as Aleta Ogord, Krugar, and Mainframe (voiced by Miley Cyrus, if you can believe it). Various characters reunite at the funeral of Yondu, including three of the movie’s key cameos. Does that mean he’ll be with them in Infinity War? More likely he’ll be part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. He’s not very good at it but he does get the arrow moving … right into Drax’s throat.ĭrax will be fine, don’t you worry, but obviously the implication here is that, like Mantis, Kraglin could join the team moving ahead. After helping the Guardians and losing his mentor Yondu, we see the Ravager Kraglin (Sean Gunn) on the Guardians’ ship, practicing with Yondu’s fin and arrow. ![]() ![]() ![]() Instead of a right to pursue happiness, we should endorse a right to the conditions that successfully foster happiness. In light of this research, a right to the pursuit of happiness may seem deeply misguided - a right we should simply abandon. And it is presumably the latter - the actual achievement of happiness - that the UN resolution aims to recognize and support. Put more strongly, supporting people in actively pursuing happiness could actually prevent people from achieving happiness. These findings suggest that, at least in the United States, promoting a right to pursue happiness could lead to behaviors and outcomes that are quite distinct from those that support happiness itself. Actively pursuing happiness (so defined) can thus decrease social connection, which is one of the best predictors of a person's wellbeing. One reason for these negative effects is that in many Western cultures, happiness is conceptualized in individualistic terms - as a personal pursuit that leads to personal achievements. have consistently found that actively seeking happiness can backfire: Those who strongly value and pursue happiness are more likely to feel disappointed about their own feelings, to report loneliness, and to have depressive symptoms. For most Americans, actively pursuing happiness isn't a reliable route to attaining it. The trouble is that a right to the pursuit of happiness may be counterproductive. Happiness just doesn't seem like the right sort of thing to proclaim as a right in itself. ![]() So it may be that the best way to understand a "right to happiness" is as a right to pursue happiness. The WHO constitution recognizes ".the highest attainable standard of health as a fundamental right of every human being," with the right to health including "access to timely, acceptable, and affordable health care of appropriate quality." Similarly, the Declaration of Independence doesn't recognize happiness as a right, but rather the pursuit of happiness. The World Health Organization endorses a "right to health," but the details make it clear that it isn't health, per se, that is a right, but rather the means to achieve the best health possible. The official page for the International Day of Happiness,, goes one step further in declaring happiness a "universal human right."īut is happiness really a human right? And is happiness a goal we should actively pursue? I think the answers are "no" and "it depends."įirst, consider the analogy between psychological wellbeing - including happiness - and physical wellbeing, or health. ![]() March 20 is the International Day of Happiness, the result of a UN resolution adopted in 2012 that identifies the pursuit of happiness as "a fundamental human goal" and promotes a more holistic approach to public policy and economic growth - one that recognizes happiness and wellbeing as important pieces of sustainable and equitable development. ![]() |
